Synopsis:
Set in 19th century France, Scarlet and Black miniseries is an elegant adaptation of Stendahl’s romantic novel of the same name. Ewan McGregor stars as Julian Sorrel, a young man of humble origins who is filled with ambition and desire for power. Believing the best route is not through the army (the red), but through the church (the black), Julian sets out to enter a seminary, but instead gives in to temptation with a married woman, Madame de Renal. Eventually, he becomes the secretary of a powerful Marquis in Paris, whose daughter (Rachel Weisz) he proceeds to seduce in order to assure his future. Meanwhile, Madame De Renal, driven by guilt over her adultery, informs the Marquis of Julian’s past. Julian then returns, intending to murder his former lover, but is sentenced to death by guillotine.
